Cross section views of your 3D XVL data are very helpful in allowing deep understanding of a design very quickly. Cross sectioning is available at no charge in the free XVL Player, and provides everyone with easy tools needed to quickly assess and understand a design.

Required:

XVL file, and the free XVL Player. All available at www.lattice3d.com (registration required). To register select the 'Download Free XVL Players' button from the home page.

Windows PC - 2000, XP or Vista OS.

Step 1. In the File Explorer window, double click on your XVL file, which will appear in Internet Explorer. (or right click and use 'Open With" to select Internet Explorer.)

Step 2. Click on the 'Switch to' button, and make sure that it is set to Edit Mode. (XVL Player 10 only.)

If you have earlier versions of XVL Player, please right click in the 3D View and select 'Switch to Edit mode'.

Then click on the Switch Toolbar button (far left) and choose the Cross Section toolbar.

Step 3. On the Cross-section toolbar, select the Create/Edit Cross Section button

The Manipulator will appear in your model.

If it is located inside your model, it will immediately section your 3D data. (see image below).

You can now move the Manipulator in any direction as indicated by the red, blue and green cross hairs. As the manipulator moves, it will automatically section the parts of the model that it touches. You move the Manipulator by clicking on any one of the cross hairs at a time, and it will move in the direction indicated by the cross hair.

You can tell which cross-hair is selected as it appears as 'bold'.

By selecting one of the circles in the manipulator, (see the highlighted green circle) you can view the cross-section in a rotational direction.

Step 4. Reposition the Manipulator to other, preset, positions, by using the Specify Location menu box located in the toolbar.

Step 5. Display the cross section without the manipulator in view, select the Edit Cross Section tool, and select Display Cross Section.

Step 6. Select "Create and Display Cross-section" from "Edit Cross-section" icon to create cross-section.

Step 7. To finish viewing the cross section, select the 'Show/Hide Cross Section' button and opt to Hide Cross Section.

Step 8. To show cross-section again, select created cross-section from the cross-section list and select "Display Cross-section" from "Show/Hide cross-section" icon.

XVL Player is a free tool to enable the viewing, review, and measurement of 3D XVL data. XVL Player can also view embedded assembly animations, 3D parts lists and work processes if they are in the XVL data. XVL PLayer enables viewing and use of extremely lightweight 3D data using the XVL format.
